The MetLife Foundation Read for Health Program: Getting Active and Eating Well: A Literacy-Based Curriculum Module (for grades 6-8): Focuses on helping adolescents develop the capacity for lifelong physical activity and healthy eating. Includes four curriculum units on the following topics: physical activity, foods of the world, influences on food choices, and setting and reaching goals related to nutrition and physical activity. Voices Against Violence: Helping Students, Parents, and School Staff Speak Up (for grades 6-8): Addresses the critical role bystanders— both adults and youth—can play in preventing school violence. Includes a DVD and video comprised of five short, dramatic vignettes and a user guide for leading class discussion about the dilemmas that bystanders face and effective ways to encourage bystanders to intervene. The MetLife Foundation Read for Health Program: Taking Action to Stop Bullying: A Literacy-Based Curriculum Module (for grades 6-8): Includes a curriculum to be taught by English language arts and/or health teachers, an implementation guide, and video for parents. Organized around the powerful theme of bullying, this program draws on the motivating power of literature to build students’ reading, interpretation, and writing skills. Students also learn effective strategies for dealing with bullying, including understanding the role that school staff and parents play in making the school a safe environment in which bullying is not tolerated.
